“don’t ask questions, just hang out”
The best advice for not endlessly tiring locals, and having them enjoy your company. Good chance is they don’t know what tree you’re looking at either (one fun response is “dis one heah? dat’s ovaheah. dat one dere? dat’s ovadeah). They don’t want to teach, just chill.
After a first night at Maui’s worst hostel (hostel city in Wailuku), I was happy to be even on the touristy south side, in Kihei. And even happier to be finding the local side, as I hung with locals and local Haoles, and cooked up food in the park (including fresh caught fish cooked only as one growing up doing it could have).
